Begins airing Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 8 p.m.
DEPRESSION: OUT OF THE SHADOWS explores the complexities of depression, and includes a 30-minute follow-up that offers advice on recognizing and treating depression. Stories are told by those living with depression including, among others, an award-winning journalist; a mother who experienced postpartum depression; a CEO who thought his depression would end his career; a young gang member battling depression and post-traumatic stress syndrome; and a successful African-American PR executive who made the difficult choice to go public with her depression. The program also features interviews with scientists about the latest neurological research and findings.
Begins airing Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 8 p.m.
MEN GET DEPRESSION explores the corrosive effect of depression on the self, relationships and careers through the profiles of a diverse group of men, including a former NFL quarterback, a Fortune 500 CEO, an unemployed Iraq War veteran, a university professor, a pastor and others. The film focuses on three stages of men's lives, with each representing a unique set of challenges and potential triggers of depression. In addition, leading mental health professionals comment on the emerging scientific understanding of depression, its physiologic causes, environmental triggers and new directions in treatment. The program also addresses depression's "collateral casualties" - men's spouses, children and friends, all of whom can play a critical role in recognizing symptoms, encouraging treatment and providing emotional support.
